For those of you who don’t have the luxury of living by a summer California beach, you understand the winter is a very difficult time to look cute, and apparently winter is not going anywhere quickly. When it’s -30 and it feels like you’re in an icy wind tunnel, the last thing on your mind is probably your beauty routine. But don’t lose hope! It is still possible to be fabulous in the winter! Here are some winter beauty tips to help you get and keep beautiful all winter long!
Make those hot showers quick!
When I was in school I used to have to walk half an hour uphill in snowstorms to get home. All I wanted was a scalding hot shower and maybe 12 Christmas cookies to make me feel better as soon as I got home. While it feels wonderful, a long hot shower is awful for your skin. Too long in the heat breaks down the fatty acids in your skin that hold moisture and leave your skin dry. Try to be in the shower for no more than 15 minutes or turn the heat down a bit to save your skin.
Sounds crazy I know, you thought sunscreen was reserved for those lucky women still in their bikinis on the beach. Not true! Just because you can’t feel your toes doesn’t mean UVA and UVB rays are not reaching your skin. Especially when being reflected off all that snow, the suns rays can still be very harmful! Now I’m not saying you need to lather your whole body in SPF 60 everyday, but try to pick a moisturizer or foundation with at least SPF 30. This will keep your skin undamaged and reduce the incidence of wrinkles.
I know I just said the sun was still out in the winter, but it isn’t reaching behind my ten layers of sweaters through the winter. If you want to keep tan all winter long (that backless New Years dress is calling your name!) I would recommend a great sunless tanner. This isn’t the 80’s (or wherever Donald Trump shops), sunless tanner will not make you look like an Oompa Loompa. Get a great buildable formula and make sure to do a test patch first to make sure you like how the colour develops on your skin. Contrary to popular belief, sunless tanner is not just a layer of fake colour, most contain the active ingredient dihydroxyacetone that changes the outer pigments of your skin temporarily (don’t worry, it’s safe!). Check some reviews and find out what is best for you. I’m partial to St. Tropez or Loving Tan. But the biggest tip of all is skip the tanning bed! You might look sun-kissed for a week, but in the future, it causes wrinkly leather-like skin and possibly fatal health consequences!
Oil Hair Treatments
When hair is exposed to the elements it often becomes dry and brittle. For a little boost use a warm olive or coconut oil mask on your hair. Just leave it in for 15 minutes and shampoo! A cheap and easy fix to those frizzy winter locks!
So, if the weather outside is frightful your beauty can still be oh so delightful! Follow some of these tips to keep you radiant all winter long.
