As a member of the blonde squad, I have my fair share of hair care related nightmare stories. One particular story comes to mind during my first year of University. After years of box bleaching, straightening and a severe lack of haircuts I finally bit the bullet and got a trim. Due to the extreme damage my hair dresser ended up having to chop a hefty chunk of hair off. Feeling naked without my long hair I then proceeded to order hair extensions off the internet, claiming to be high quality human hair, but at only $45 (red flag much?). A friend of mine told me that they were probably synthetic, but I denied it and continued to try to curl my new favourite accessory. I’m sure you can guess that the smell of burnt plastic lingered in my dorm room for days and my extensions did not look so cute. Moral of the story 1) Do not buy $45 dollar hair extensions and 2) There are way better options to getting long and healthy hair. Older and wiser, I have since learned a few great beauty tips for healthy happy hair!
Keep the dye at a minimum
If you are like me, the appearance of roots makes you cringe, even if they’re barely visible. I used to completely bleach my whole head with box dye every 6 weeks or so. So not necessary, and directly results in damaged strands. Try to rock your natural hair colour, it probably suits you pretty well! However, if you do want to dye try to keep your colourings to a minimum. It’s best to use a professional, but if that breaks the bank, use a dye with less harsh chemicals and try to only process your roots, using the same colour and brand each time. If the brassiness of your hair is just too much, try a great purple shampoo once a week to keep your blonde fresh. For all colour make sure to use a coloured hair specific shampoo.
Feed you hair all the good stuff
Just like your body needs specific nutrition to keep feeling great so does your hair. Proper nutrition will keep your hair healthy and shiny! For direct hair help you can also use kitchen products as cheap and natural hair masks. Products like coconut oil, mayonnaise and avocados are amazing ingredients to put in a DIY hair mask!
It sounds counter intuitive, but get regular hair cuts. If you leave dead and split ends for too long your hair will never grow. Regular trims (once every three months or so) will actually result in longer, healthier hair.
Ditch the daily wash
Washing your hair with shampoo everyday can leave it dry and damaged. Try starting with every other day and then if you can progress to every three or four days. Your scalp will acclimate its oil production and leave your hair growing faster and healthier. When you do shampoo, try to use a gentle formula with mainly or all natural ingredients.
